OSCE Office and Yerevan State University sign a co-operation agreement
On March 2, the Head of the OSCE Office in Yerevan, Ambassador Andrey Sorokin and YSU Rector Aram Simonyan signed a Memorandum of Understanding on establishing a Sustainable Development Centre at YSU Faculty of Geography and Geology. Aram Simonyan presented the OSCE delegation YSU history, structure and some details on the current processes at YSU.
I am sure that this cooperation will not only give a new breath to the Faculty of Geography and Geology, but the scientific life at the university in general. The future of our university is in such centers, as the experience shows, that the healthy competition between the faculties and centers leads to the desired results, – said the Rector.
Andrey Sorokin first expressed his gratitude for the cooperation. We highly appreciate the cooperation with Armenia at any level. This center will bring together the universitys scientific potential and will contribute to the development of the university scientific life, – he said. The center, via courses and round tables, will support the adaptation and application of the UN declarations on sustainable development, serving as a resource-center for the researchers.
The aim of the Center is to ensure the participation of civil society and the scientific community in the promotion of principles, outlined in the UN Rio Declaration on Environment and Development. It should also promote the public participation in the process of solution of the environmental issues, as well as create a transparent environment.
In cooperation with Aarhus centers in Armenia the Center will organize trainings on sustainable development with target groups, including NGOs, media, businessmen and decision makers.
According to the agreement free access to the Centers facilities for individuals, non-governmental organizations, associations, governmental institutions and international organizations will be ensured. It also envisages setting up a library and a website.
