On World Environment Day Natural Disaster Risk Reduction Issues were discussed in Alaverdi
On World Environment Day on 5th of June, A. Evoyan, coordinator of Alaverdi Aarhus Center conducted a training course for schoolchildren of Alaverdi High School N 5.
The event participants and Center coordinator started the day with mutual congratulations highlighting the advice of the day: each person should be environmentalist to some extent.
The training was organized within the frameworks of the “Enhancing Local Capacity and Regional Cooperation for climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation in Georgia and the South Caucasus” project, which implementer in Armenia is
Alaverdi Aarhus Center always supports NGOs implementing environmental projects in the region, and this one was no exception. The course was held under the theme “Natural disaster risk reduction”.The possible natural disasters, their causes, damages and preventive measures in the South Caucasus were thoroughly presented to the students on the background of the ongoing global climate change. Brief information was given about disaster risk reduction, management, organizations and international institutions engaged in this field in Armenia. The students had an opportunity to ask questions about the topic and misunderstood issues and receive responses by the trainer.
The students started discussion about Lori region’s natural disasters, those dangerousness, elimination and consequences providing typical examples.
On their proposal, Aarhus Center Coordinator promised to arrange a meeting with the staff of the Lori regional rescue service, in order to obtain more detailed information.
In conclusion, the students were informed about the CENN-declared contest under the theme “Protect the Environment”, the winner of which will have an opportunity to spend summer vacations in Bulachauri community of Georgia. All participating students were given “Before disaster, during disaster, after disaster,” brochure.
