Alarm: Tree pruning has started in Stepanavan in summer
16.06.2014
In June Stepanavan Aarhus Center received a call from the citizen who were concerned about the pruning of poplars on the edges of the road in Gyulagarak and Stepanavan areas. The Aarhus Centre Coordinator immediately did research in Gyulagarak and gave an interview to the Lori Region “Fortuna” TV company. After the interview M. Meliqjanyan organized a meeting with H. Hovivyan, director of Stepanavan road construction and maintenance (RCM) LTD.
H. Hovivyan answered the questions of the Aarhus Center Coordinator informing that pruning of poplars on the edges of the road in Gyulagarak and Stepanavan areas is done based on the written permissions

of the Ministry of Transport and Communication 13.05.14. N 218-07/187 and the Ministry of Nature Protection. H. Hovivyan added that pruning is necessary, because the trees were planted in 1953, and now they are overgrown and threaten to the surrounding environment. He said that the primarily and urgently are pruned the poplars, which have a 15-35 degree inclination to the road traffic sector and are rotten in 4-5 height hindering safe driving.

The Aarhus Center also found out that during the pruning the organization was guided by the tree pruning order of 70s.

The Aarhus Center was not satisfied with the oral explanations and sent a written request to the head of the Stepanavan RCM Company receiving literally the same answer.
This incident is one of the hundreds of cases that indicates that having a clear management policy of using green areas in the communities as well as scientifically based regulation of caring and pruning the trees is a priority for the RA.
