The issues of mines operating in Tavush and nearby regions
On May 23, environmental films’ screening was organized in Idjevan Aarhus Centre, which key themes were the issues of the mines exploitation. It should be noted that on May 19, the same films were also screened at the city square: through the transformer for the open audience.
The themes and titles of the movies were also notable, “The richest city in the world” and “Pretty girl, why have you come, do you want to do my job?”.
There are 25 mines in Tavush, and those numbers with the neighboring provinces are 211, 11 of which are metal mines. Recently, studies have been made in direction to find new reserves of gold and copper.
The most mines developing in Tavush region are mineral, sedimentary and volcanic rocks deposits. One of the biggest mine, which is in the focus of attention of civil society, is Teghut, located in the adjacent Lori region.
There are 5 tailing dumps in the neighboring provinces, which are containing dangerous heavy metals and other harmful substances and posing great threat to the surrounding environment.
The aim of organizing film screenings in Idjevan by the Aarhus Center was to inform about the mining industry and new mines possible exploitation as well as discussing the issues covered in the films.
