The visit of the UNDP environmental and GEF SGP programs Coordinators to Kapan Aarhus Center
On April 22, A. Martirosyan, environmental projects coordinator under UNDP and H. Ghazaryan, national coordinator of GEF SGP visited Kapan Aarhus Center. The goal of the visit was the implementation of monitoring of the projects “Preventing pollution of Voghji river waters with heavy metals through coastal ecosystem restoration in Kapan city” and “Recovery of degraded lands and agricultural biodiversity in Norashenik community of the RA Syunik province” in the city of Kapan.
The Aarhus Center had direct participation in the course of drafting and implementing both these programs, creating awareness of the public as well
as conducting informational seminars. In the center also was discussed “The manual of recognition, collection, processing and usage of mushrooms “.
Information was provided on restoration of the water pipeline “Mother Brook” in Syunik region’s rural communities, damages caused to public health and environmental hazards. Then a trip was organized for implementing monitoring of tree planting and adaptability of the trees at the end of the 2nd stage of the OSCE and UNDP SGP’s project “Preventing pollution of Voghji river waters with heavy metals through coastal ecosystem restoration in Kapan city” at the central area neighboring the market in the town of Kapan. Although the results were good, but it was noted that in the hot summer days from the stones intense heating can be damaged roots of the trees, so it was necessary to cover the planted trees with an extra layer of sawdust about 30 cm in diameter, which will retain a significant amount of soil moisture.
