What steps are undertaken by Armenia with regard to improvement of Transboundary EIA process concerning Metsamor nuclear power plant construction?
On September 5-7, the 36th session of the Compliance Committee of the Espoo Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in Transboundary Context was held in Geneva. The Committee reviewed the process of implementation of the decision VI / 2 of the Meeting of the Parties to the Convention, which refers to actions taken by Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus and Ukraine (June2-5, 2016). https://www.unece.org/fileadmin/DAM/env/eia/decisions/Decision_VI.2.pdf)
In particular, the Committee, in the report prepared for the meeting, considered assessment and recommendations on the following issues:
The measures undertaken by the Ukrainian government in fulfilling its obligations under the Convention in connection with the “Express” canal creation project in the Danube Delta on the Ukrainian part of the Danube-Black Sea Canal project and extending the deadline for the Rovensk NPP operation, legislation adopted by Azerbaijan in accordance with the Convention, the steps taken by Belarus and Lithuania in connection with the construction of Ostrovetski NPP.
As for Armenia, on the agenda of the session of the Espoo Convention Compliance Committee were the legislation adopted by Armenia for the purpose to implement the Convention, the notification of any step aimed at Environmental Impact Assessment in Transboundary Context of Metsamor nuclear power plant construction.
