Interconnection between water resources and jobs

22.03.2016
On March 22 each year the international community celebrates the World Water Day. This year this environmental holiday is dedicated to mutual relationship between water resources and jobs. Currently, more than half of the country, about 1.5 billion people are working in different sectors of the economy which are directly related to water resources. In general our activities to some extent are linked to the water.
At the same time, millions of people whose profession or work is connected with water are working in conditions where basic safety rules are not maintained and not provided with basic workers’ rights.
In accordance with the International Labour Organization (ILO) data, annually about 340 000 workers are dying due to poor sanitation conditions or water supply problems.

By this very reason the motto in 2016 is “Water and jobs.

“Tens of thousands of fishermen depend on fresh water quality, millions of farmers depend on irrigation water, and the list may be continued indefinitely. Due to the water we not only live, but also dress, eat, build and produce. Extremely close is the relationship between water quantity and quality and human development.

The UN and ILO, which this year have been involved in organizing official events related to the Water Day, governments and NGOs, academic institutions, business and media representatives and other interested parties, call for special attention to job creation and sustainable role in the development of water resources.

It should be recalled that according to the UN General Assembly’s resolution adopted in 1993 the advice of the World Water Day is raising public awareness on the importance of water resources and its rational and caring use, as well as induce active protection of water resources and recovery.

Today in Armenia various NGOs, initiative groups and schools have celebrated Water Day, collecting around them anxious and interested persons.
