Illegal logging monitoring group has witnessed a sad picture

Despite unfavorable weather conditions, on 9 October, the working group conducting studies decided to visit to the area of “Shikahogh” state reserve of “Zangezur” Biosphere Complex.

The group was made up of representatives of 6 organizations (WWF Armenia, HBKP Foundation, OSCE PIU of Syunik province, Kapan Aarhus Center, “Sustainable Development” NGO and “KHUSTUP” environmental NGO), at the level of heads.

Due to unfavorable weather conditions journalists did not join the group.

After the public discussion the coordinator of Kapan Aarhus Center over the phone had informed Karen Kirakosyan, director of “Zangezur” Biosphere Complex SNCO about the working group’s visit. Therefore, to the group of “Shikahogh” state reserve joined Karen Barseghyan, deputy director of the SNCO on conservation issues.

Then Vahram Martirosyan, senior forester of Kapan Forestry joined to the group, who helped us very much to find out the area of deforestation, thanks to the forestry’s programmed GPS device, which clearly showed the boundaries and points.

We visited four areas, the picture was very sad; it can be judged by the photographs.
Even in dark and gloomy years of 90s there have not been such pictures in Kapan region, especially at the area of the state reserve.

Karen Manvelyan, director of WWF Armenia took coordinates of the logged trees from each section in order to determine if those were at the reserve area or not, after which we returned to Kapan.

After having the clear picture will be made a protocol and the working group will determine its next steps.
