Samples taken from Mets Ayrum drinking water source will be subjected to laboratory examination
Alaverdi Aarhus Center volunteers, jointly with the coordinator, expressed their willingness to assist the expert Mr. Seyran Minasyan to find out solutions to the questions related to the “Nahatak” tailing dump of Akhtala MPP. On May 14, they went to Chochkan, Mets Ayrum, Akhtala communities.
Water samplimg was carried out from Mets Ayrum drinking water source, as well as from four other different locations, which will be tested in laboratory in Yerevan.
Although the Aarhus Center volunteers were aware of the tailings problems, seeing the situation they were more focused on the issue.
Environment, beautiful nature, human health corrupting toxic waste dumps and Akhtala Combine sloppy manufacturing practices neglected to the inconsistency of the situation in Chochkan, Mets Ayrum and Akhtala communities. In this way the volunteers are trying to contribute to the implementation of the repeatedly voiced demands, problem professional analysis and and to find possible solutions for the issue. Realizing the urgency of recultivation of tailings inherited from the Soviet times, young people attach importance to the professional approach to be able to clarify this process by the right of claims.
Although Akhtala MPP, which does not inspire confidence, has planned to build a new tailing dam in Nahatak canyon and makes promises of serious approaches for environmental solutions, the problem is being exacerbated.
