Training course under the theme “The Aarhus Convention and the mining industry” in Kotayq and Kaputan Community
Recently, Hrazdan Aarhus Center got informed that on 22 May, at 12:00 pm would be held public hearings over Initial evaluation of Abovyan (Kaputan) iron deposit of “Spice Steel” company of Kotayk region of the RA in Kotayk regional administration. Kaputan iron ore deposit is one of the three mines (Hrazdan, Kaputan, Svarants), around which had been created scandal many years ago.
Concerned of the issue the coordinators of Hrazdan Aarhus Center and members of “Healthy Hrazdan” civil initiative on May 15 visited Kotayk and Kaputan communities.
The purpose of the visit was to present the Aarhus Convention and mining industry risks and hazards at the above mentioned Community Administrations. As it turned out during the visit, Kaputan iron mine is stretching along with the left and right sides of Kotayq-Kaputan highway and according to the residents the closest house to the mine is located about 100-150 meters away. Both in Kotayq and Kaputan Community Administrations great interest was displayed refer to the presented issue.
Introducing the three pillars of the Aarhus Convention the center coordinators put emphasis on the role and significance of the public participation in environmental decision-making process.
A. Shahbazyan, village head of Kotayk showed the mine area on the map and the distance from the community with confidence that the village would suffer in the case of the mine operation.
The same concern expressed S. Mikaelyan, Kaputan village head mentioning that the 98% of Kaputan residents are against the mine operation, as the residents of Kaputan for centuries have lived there and firmly clung to that land, and under no circumstances will allow black clouds to pile up over the village’s head.
